press release - Pop-Off Tuesday
Formed in London in 1995, the Japanese duo of Hiroki Miyauchi (machines) and Minori Odaira (vocals/guitars) released their debut single, 'This Old Lady', on Origin Records 18 months later. This grabbed the attention of one John Peel, who booked them in for a session, which in turn grabbed the attention of the then fledgling Pickled Egg, who released their 2nd single, the gorgeous 'Unworldy', in July 98. This had the cognoscenti in raptures. Record Collector, in making it their August single-of-the-month, hailed it "an emotional symphony in noise... quite superb". The stunning eponymous debut album was equally well-received...
"A truly magnificent record, which a brooding sense of mystery serves only to enhance. Pop-Off Tuesday are the end of pop music: nothing can follow this and measure up" [Jimmy Possession, Robots & Electronic Brains]
"The sense of flow is wonderful, the tunes are great and although there is a lot going on, nothing is overdone. In time this album could - and certainly should - become regarded as an underground milestone and its sense of the mysterious will always beguile" [John Cavanagh, BBC Radio Scotland]
"At their best, the elements come together with an enticing bleakness reminiscent of Nico's Masterpiece, The Marble Index. Highly recommended." [Andy Gill, The Independent]
