press release - Need New Body
Youd be hard pressed to find a band more unnerving than Need New Body. The Philadelphia group, risen from the ruins of N.Jersey psych/art-rock pranksters Bent Leg Fatima, is about as unpredictable as they come. The five members swirl organ, drums, sax, bass and in the words of vocalist/dancer/multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bradbury "pots and pans, banjos, good spirits, evil spirits," into a wicked hurdy gurdy. One gets the feeling that the bands music in a way continuing Bent Legs deconstruction of the Psychadelphia sound into fractious shards of out-jazz, jive poetry and derelict cabaret is as much for the bands amusement as that of their listeners. Where other experimental/art-rock outfits sometimes drown in the pretension of their own creations, Need New Body is dead set on avoiding the artistic quicksand that engulfs some of their peers. "I think," sums up drummer Chris Powell, "that were pretty much doing it just because its fun."
"This 22 track CD is a vitally weird and engaging work. Tiny babies of Beefheart, Sun Ra and Sun City Girls, squealing in delight and doing mad Busby Berkeley choreography on a layer cake the size of a skyscraper [George Parsons, Dream Magazine]
Saxophone blasts, buoyant bass lines, and minimal organ noise preach a Zappa-Faust-Ayler-Sun Ra-like gospel of avant rock that's both fun and ferocious [A D Amorosi, Philadelphia Enquirer]
Need New Bodys hour-long debut is sublime tumbledown glitch jazz. Need New Body fronts like Tom Waits spoiling for a scrap and lurches like Captain Beefheart off his head, but at the heart is the belief that you can dance to this music. And you can dance to it, especially when the angles are less obtuse and a groove grows from the flowing experimentalism [Jimmy Possession, Sleazenation]
