This is one heck of a crazy album, and a vitally engaging work. Listening to the first couple of tunes you might be forgiven for thinking that this is a new Bablicon record, but from the opening bars of the third song, Another Day at the Pizzeria, and for pretty much the rest of the album, things turn decidedly more strange: deconstructed punk, jazz, techno, rock, electronica and pop entice the listener into wonderfully uncharted waters. But throughout, the playing is infused with an obvious sense of fun, and for much of its length, this is an unashamedly melodic LP, albeit one that is more than a little off-kilter.
Butchy Fuego is a high school drop out with a missing tooth. He currently lives in Chicago where he builds igloos in the winter, fixes and races bicycles in the summer and is inspired by old things and good smells. Like John Coltrane, The Beatles, or even Ludwig Van Beethoven before him, Butchy Fuego makes music. His debut album lacks a cohesive consistency, with the exception of that lack of consistency operating as a glue to create a fluidity of aural dualities. The melodies, though strong are more narrative than sing-songy. The songs strive for intimacy and audience attentiveness, begging the listener to embark on a journey; a fantastical cinematic circus where ideas like stupid and smart exist together in harmonious space; a journey that in the end leaves you curious, dizzy, maybe perplexed, yet wanting to live in that world over and over.
His collaborators include Blue Hawaii (Bablicon, HIM, Orso) with both musical and engineering input, Matt Schnieder (HIM, Toe), The Diminisher (Bablicon, Michael Columbia, Orso), Peter Andreadis (All City Affairs), as well as slew of other guests. Instruments featured on this record, though too numerous to mention in full, include: electric guitars, clarinet, piano, drums, synthesizers, vocals, bass guitars, melodica, ukulele, organ, saxophone, theremin, bass clarinet, tape manipulation and toy accordion.
