DundeE-Live marks the 25th Anniversary of the first ever UK Electronica Festival back in 1983.

Back then, Jeanette and Dennis Emsley, two electronic music fans who were promoting the genre on local radio, had also set up a unique cassette-magazine called Inkeys which featured DJ-style voiceovers and links plus new and exclusive music from electronic music artists from the UK and all around the world. It proved to be a huge success for them and grew up to 17 issues over a three year period.

In 1983, with the assistance of Mark Jenkins, Mark Shreeve, the late Bob Cutts and Peter Harrison, plus Andy G from Lotus Records, they organised the first UK Electronica festival at Woughton Campus in Milton Keynes.

UK Electronica was essentially meant to be a live version of Inkeys, and to that end, featured concert performances, sales stands, electronic music demos, instrument demos and info dissemination, as well as personal appearances from electronic musicians not playing at the event. The first event featured, among others, Ron Berry and Ian Boddy, and was a huge success.

Spurred on by this, and given the opportunity to organise at Sheffield's University/Octagon Centre complex, the Emsleys moved the event to Sheffield in 1984, this one even geting mentioned via an interview on Radio 1's lunchtime news programme, Newsbeat. Their final promotion, also at Sheffield, was UK Electronica '85, which featured the debut of Wavestar, a duo featuring the late Dave Ward Hunt and a certain John Dyson, plus Scottish band Altres, a sextet of which five turned up to play!

In 1986 and 1987, Andy G's Lotus Records took over the running of the event, which moved to Stafford's Gatehouse Theatre, numbering among others, Ron Berry and Ian Boddy and Wavestar once again, plus the Electronica debut of Vietgrove.

For 1988, Ant Thasher, the electronica stage manager from '84 onwards, organised an event in Bradford, while Mark Jenkins, one of the original organisers, promoted and ran one in London in 1989.

The final UK Electronica took place in Sheffield once again, returning to its spiritual home at the University complex, in 1990.

Now, 25 years after the original festival and 18 years since the last one, Inkeys are proud to present "DundeE-Live" - The 25th Anniversary Festival Of UK Electronica '83.

The chosen venue for 2008 marks, for the first time, a move north of the border, to Scotland's east coast, specifically Dundee and the venue Hustlers based in North Lindsey Street in the city centre.

Mirroring the original promotion, the festival will be a 12 hour event from midday to midnight, featuring 7 bands and artists playing live; DVD showings of previous events, including most or all of the legendary Ash Ra headline performance in 1985, and more, on a large screen in the concert area; sales and information stands, plus a few exclusive music tracks played between sets.

12.30pm - Modulator ESP
13.30 - Vietgrove
14.30-15.00 - break
15.00 - Ron Berry
16.00 - Ion
17.00-18.00 break
18.00 - Ian Boddy
19.00 - break
19.30 - Altres
21.00 - break
21.30 - John Dyson
23.00 - break
23.00 - video of UKE '85 Ash Ra set if anyone sticks around to watch it
Midnight - end.

Tickets for the event will available locally from the venue or from Grouchos Records and Ticket Shop in the Nethergate, while they may be purchased by mail order from CD Services Mail Order (Tel:01382-776595). Advance tickets are available at £10 (+ likely booking fee), and on the day at the venue for £15. Re-entry during the day will be allowed on presentation of the ticket at the door.

The venue is city centre with shops and eating places within 2 minutes walk, while the venue itself has a licensed bar and a childrens licence.

With Nessie (Jeanette), original creator of Inkeys and UK Electronica, in attendance as special guest, this will not only be a very special event but also strictly a 1-off and so we hope as many of you will attend as possible, and we look forward to giving you one of the finest days of electronic music you'll have enjoyed for many years.

[NOTTM] 06/10 The Centrifuge presents DAEDELUS @ Brownes

Mon 6th October - The Centrifuge presents Daedelus LIVE @ Brownes,Goosegate, Hockley, NG1 1FE.
Doors 7pm, live acts on early! FREE ENTRY ALL NIGHT - NO DRESS CODE.

Well folks, its a new season and a change of scenery for The Centrifuge's next instalment of live sonic trickery from the leading edge of electronic music. For this event we are excited and proud to bring you arguably our biggest midweek lineup to date...and due to an outstanding performance by our friends at the newly reopened Brownes in Hockley, its FREE ENTRY ALL NIGHT!

Top of the bill is Ninja Tune's LA retro-digital maestro DAEDELUS (http://www.myspace.com/daedelusdarling), a true innovator in the use of new technology to achieve a timeless, classic sound. Alfie (as his friends call him) was one of the first beta users of the revolutionary Monome control surface, used in combination with bespoke Max/MSP patches to achieve hitherto unseen levels of responsiveness and control over live audio manipulation. Wow those are some long words, but dont let that fool you into thinking this is some chinstroker-haven - Daedelus knows how to get a crowd MOVING, having enchanted festival and club dancefloors across the world this summer.

In support are proud to finally score a show with ex-Kids in Tracksuits member and Notts' man of the moment LONE (http://www.myspace.com/lonemusic) who has been making some serious waves across the world with his latest album 'Lemurian' on Dealmaker - a hazy, dreamy journey through post-Boards of Canada soundscapes and mesmerising lo-slung broken beats. Winner!

As always The Centrifuge provide a bevy of killer live acts to enthuse and bewilder across the electronic spectrum - encompassing the melodic ambient-glitch of NeuTek (http://thecentrifuge.co.uk/?artist=neutek), the live analog mastery of Oxynucid (http://www.myspace.com/oxynucid), Communicon's advanced electro (http://www.myspace.com/communicon) and the live remix tendencies of missaw (http://thecentrifuge.co.uk/?artist=missaw).

And all for free, all night long! Can't say fairer than that for a Monday. Come beat the weekend blues with an early doors show that will knock your socks off!

Lena, Extended Gestures for Cello (CDR Hypnos Secret Sounds)

As an artist new to the recording scene, calling yourself simply "Lena" is certainly one way to make sure you don´t stand out in the crowd. I believe there are already a handful of Lenas on the record store shelves; I myself am currently working on a review of the third album by another Lena, the nom-de-reggae of French-Canadian sound artist Mathias Delplanque.

However much she - and this Lena is indeed a she - hides the light of her personality under a bushel, Lena could not be more forthcoming in calling her album Extended Gestures for Cello. For that is exactly what it is - a whopping seventy minutes delving into cello sonorities. A "gesture" is generally understood as a simple, physical movement meant to convey a rather straightforward thought, and over ten tracks ranging from one to almost fifteen minutes, Lena coaxes many exquisite ideas out of her overgrown fiddle while her husband, ambient stalwart M. Griffin, paints a slightly out of focus background with subtle electronic treatments. I particularly like the sense of enormous indoor space they create on "Crowdmurmurs, Peopletalk".

The longest track "Workings of Silver Fortunetellilng Machines" is a masterpiece of patience, as Lena strokes the cello once with her bow, allows the note to sound, carry, get caught up in the discreet electrical storm surrounding it in space, and diminish before taking another swipe at the instrument. Probably one of the most meticulously created and intellectually enjoyable ambient tracks I´ve heard this year.

Not every single one of these "gestures" succeeds, but if Lena continues to carve out a career as ambient cellist, it will be interesting to see where her skill and imagination take her.

http://www.myspace.com/scrasemusic

Scrase has been fine tuning his ambient electronic sounds from when I first came across him at Reading’s infamous electronic music rave night Fractals. He’s been churning out the goods with releases on Audio Aubergine and most recently Organic Analogue Records with his Platz EP with a more dub step influenced take on down tuned techno.

http://www.myspace.com/robotforbrains

For the past 10 years since the age of 13 Robot For Brains has been collecting music making equipment wiring it up and delaying sounds as part of his fascination with electronic music constructions.

Former DJ resident of BotBox at the Bethnal Green working man’s club even supporting Fingathing on one of his UK tours.

Robot for Brains is soon to be featured on label compilations for ARP records alongside the likes of Boxcutter and Italtek and Swishcotheque records with his own EP to follow soon on that label.

Plus DJs Kiersty and Dr. Bibliotheque will be filling in the gaps with old skool, electronica, techno and jungle sounds.

Entry is a cheeky squirt of £3 all night

Various Artists, Mandala, Volume 1: A Chinese Whisper of Drone Music (3" CDR Ex Ovo)

After launching their new label in a big way, with the gigantic full-length compilation CD "I, Mute Hummings" and its complement "Mute Scribbles", Tobias Fischer and Mirko Uhlig launch another big project in a more demune manner.

"Chinese whispers" is a children´s game which where I grew up, we called "broken telephone" - all the kids sit in a circle and one whispers a phrase into the ear of another, who repeats it to the next child, and so on round the circle. Normally, by the time the last child has uttered what has made it to him, the words have become totally transformed into a new, and hopefully hilariously absurd, phrase.

Here, the aim is the creation of a new artist and a piece greater than the sum of the four parts, because who can say for certain where one´s work ends and the next begins? Call it an "almost differentiated mass" - a string of discrete voices each identifiable as its own smeared into one clearly collective effort. Uhlig, Fischer (identified as Feu Follet on the front of the tiny cover, by his own on the back), Keith Berry and guitarist Jörg Eger all contribute, and the piece drifts serenely above a widely varied and colourful landscape before ending by bending a few suggestive twangs on acoustic guitar, these cowboys riding off into the sunset. Until next time, pardners. And I do mean that sincerely; I´m certainly looking forward to the next volumes in the series.

More on them :

Scott Ferguson ( Detroit - Ferris Park , Deep Vibes , International Dj Gigolos, Kinda Soul Recordings )

With 17 releases under his belt as well as various remixes and appearance on mixes and compilations , a forthcoming album on K Soul's , " Kinda Of Soul " imprint ( The album is out in October ) ; is fair to say that Scott is a veteran in what he does .

A unique synthesis of Blues, Soul, Disco, House, and Techno music are echoed in both Scott Ferguson’s productions and DJ sets. His jazzy and soulful compositions, energetic club tracks and druggy slow-burners incorporate a blend of engaging rhythms with conscious themes. A perfect blend of awareness and unique style makes Ferguson stand on his own and is embraced by music lovers around the globe.

In 1994/95 Hungry and seeking knowledge, Scott Ferguson connected with local DJs at Zoots, The Sardine Bar, and warehouse parties at the Packard Plant and Bankle Building where Detroit’s electronic music sub-culture thrived. Attending raves and clubs on a weekly basis, Scott became immersed in the scene as well as starting his own collection of House and Techno records. He never looked back since .

2002 saw the launch of Ferrispark with the hit ep , „Dump Days . this ep went on to receive accolades from the press across europe and many parts of the world and won him fans left right and centre . those fans included some of the biggest names in electronic music - Louie Vega, Terry Hunter, Frankie Knuckles , Stacey pullen , Dj Hell , Terence Parker e.t.c. to name but a few .

Prosumer ( Berghain /Panorama Bar , Ostgut , Running Back , Playhouse )

Achim Brandenburg aka Prosumer has been a fervent collector of music for years . Resident at world renowned Berghain/Panorama Bar & has had a stint behind the counter at another Berlin institute ; HardWax .

Here is what Prosumer has to say about his sets and music in general :
" My heart is beating for early Chicago -Detroit techno records and for music thats similar and transports this feeling today . Generally i like producers who follow their feeling and who work on a personal style which caters for longevity , rather than a momentary kick . "

Prosumer is not only a dj but he is also a producer . he released his debut ep on Swayzak’s 240 volts label in 2004 then followed the smash hit " The Craze " in 2005 on Playhouse . Soon he was in demand for remix work . he released another hit ep on Gerd janson’s , Running Back imprint .
2008 saw an album by Prosumer and studio partner Murat Tepeli and he has since been ultra busy with dj & live stints in revered clubs such as the Rex , Robert Johnson , Fabric , Piping Club , Weekend , Watergate , Paradiso e.t.c.

Dr. Nagual X, Illégal Dub Music (Djahkooloo Records)

Dr. Nagual X apparently has a long history both as instrumentalist and producer, building his own studio three years ago. Illégal Dub Music is his second album. Truly a doctor without borders, he brings together the swing and sway of dub rhythms and the gritty, sweaty, unrelenting noisiness of urban life, whether it is occuring on a Nairobi street corner or on messy sheets in some bedroom in the concrete suburbs of Paris or Marseille.

Onto the rock-solidest of bass foundations, Dr. Nagual X splashes vocal samples like an action painter throwing colour at a canvas. Illégal Dub Music conjures up a busy street, a stock exchange floor, a stockyard floor of voices - constantly chattering, cajoling, confronting, seducing, making and accepting deals, for sex, for money, for temporary gratification. It is the medieval marketplace overlapping impalpably with the never-ending converse of the Internet.

It is carnival, too - singing (some wonderful, mainly female, voices have been recruited for this session) for the sheer joy of singing, with Jamaican, Indonesian, African, even, I would swear, Ladino inflection.

Dr. N has truly fashioned a fourth world music all his own, fusing many far-flung influences within the warm, motherly embrace of dub reggae. He plays almost all the instruments but his passionate Hammond organ and the trombones of Dominique Rataud and Low Brize outshine most everything else.

However: There is one serious criticism that must be levelled at this album. The last few tracks, about a quarter of the entire playing time, veer wildly off course, into another album altogether, so that we end not with the salty taste of reggae on our lips but rather some twenty minutes of pretty generic jungle.

Sometimes it´s a bad thing that there is so much space on a CD, because if this album had ended after the eighth track, its lasting impression would have been positive through and through.
